In for a filling... - 15 February 2008
A Wigan man got more than he expected out of a trip to Eastern Europe to have some dental work carried out, when he decided to set up home in a Hungarian village after being impressed by the way of life he found.
Bill Farnworth, a 58-year-old former bakery engineer, had traveled to Hungary to have work done on his teeth and was so pleased by the way of life and the culture of respect he found in the village of Deg that he bought a property there. He is now in the process of converting the former garage into an idyllic three-bedroom property complete with a lake and part of a deer forest.
The property and renovations have been paid for in part by the £6,000 that he saved in having his dental work carried out away from the expensive treatments in the UK. Mr Farnworth is now planning to move permanently to Hungary once work on the house is completed, and hopes his partner Pat Eccleston will join him there once she has retired from teaching next year.
The full price of the property and the work being carried out to it is around £36,000, far cheaper than the property he is selling and leaving behind in Wigan.
Commenting on why he is making the move, Mr Farnworth said that he likes the fact that Hungary in ‘like the UK of 25 years ago, before it became spoiled. It is more advanced than people imagine, and there is no yob culture.’
The property is close to Lake Balaton, which offers one of the biggest tourist attractions in the country as well as access options from the UK, and Bill has also been offered part-time employment with the company from which he bought his property. His next project is likely to be a conversion on an old pigsty next to the property he has just bought that he will then rent out to tourists. Of course, he is hoping that he will end up smelling of roses at the end of it all.
