Italy goes eco - 18 October 2007

When it comes to energy efficiency in the home, Italy leads the way in with new homes requiring 20 times less energy than traditional buildings.

Italy is the home of culture, style and exceptional architecture. The British have long loved the sleepy hamlets, shuttered windows, bougainvillea strewn balconies and all that is “typical Italian”, but the recent Stern review has made it clear that there is a powerful case to cut emissions which means that new homes will have to take on a totally different approach to build.

The Government has set out an ambitious timetable for the progressive tightening of building regulations in 2010 with the aim of achieving zero carbon new homes by 2016.

“As a company we take the matter of global warming very seriously”, says Luca Catalano of Realitalia. ”We are members of the UK Green Building Council and we have signed the ‘2016 Commitment’ to build zero carbon rated homes by that date, so there is no doubting our total dedication to achieving our aims”.
